Car: Clubman Estate 1977
Drums all round (fronts twin slave, rears single slave)

I've fitted new shoes to the front drums on my clubby estate. I was going to fit new drums too but even with the adjuster wound back as far as it would go I couldn't get the drum over the shoes. These are the pads I've used http://www.minispare...id=35880&title=

I've now fitted the old drums over the new shoes and even with the adjusters wound back as far as possible I still cannot turn the wheel by hand. The wheel turns freely without the drum on. I've also fitted new springs on both front and rears.

I used this thread the fit the shoes in the correct direction http://www.theminifo...ng/page__st__15

I've fitted new shoes and drums to the rears no problem using these shoes http://www.minispare...id=34707&title=

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'd double check you have the adjusters correctly wound back. When I first did mine on the Elf I thought I'd wound them back but in actuality wound them on :ohno:
Also check the pistons have been shoved right back into the cylinder.

Double check the shoe fitting, that topic you linked to got bit confusing, one of the photo's posted was wrong.
Check the pictures near the end.

Also daft question but you backed off both adjusters, there's one top and bottom
Also they are a cam adjuster if you go to far they start to spread the shoes again.

Probably easier watch the shoes without the drum to see they have fully retracted.
Also check non of your slave cylinders are seized.

I did the adjustment with the drums off so I could see that the adjuster wasn't touching the shoe.

The shoes are on the right way round with Shifty's 'gap in the direction of travel'.

I don't think the cylinders would be seized, they were changed before the MOT in April.

One thing I haven't tried is to get someone to pump the brakes slowly with the drum off to see if the shoes go out and return. I'll try that.

As discussed in that thread, "gap in the drection of travel" is very easy to take the wrong way.

The diagram in that post is correct. I have compared it with the images in the haynes manual.

As you're setting up the front drums and not the rears, why is everyone posting pictures of the rear ?

Because the same rule applies.

If you put your finger on the drum and rotate it, as you move over a shoe, your finger will pass the the end of the shoe that has no friction material first before moving over the rest of the shoe.

Yep shoes are fine, adjusters do look like you could back them off a tad more, if you fully turn them so thepeg isn't touching the shoe can you push the pistons in anymore ???

The front adjusters work in a different way to the rears. The back adjusters are on a screw, so the more you undo them the looser they get.
The front adjusters work on a cam so as you 'undo' them they will get looser-tighter-looser-tighter etc etc.

In your picture the pins attached to the adjusters are just touching the shoes. A half turn clockwise on both should ensure that they are clear.

I'd agree with the point above, back the adjusters off some more.

Also a point to note is that you turn the adjusters in the direction of the wheel rotation to tighten them, then back them off.

I've just backed off the adjusters so they are not even close and still the same problem.

One thing I have just noticed is that the drum doesn't bind until it's screwed into position. With the drum just sat in position but pushed all the way on it turns but with a little resistance.
