Hello i am planning a 1293 turbo build using all the metro turbo set up and i am a little unclear about weither fitting a bulhead box could possibly cause any problems with the DVLA or other bodys and also i was wondering if there are any manifolds for the T3 that will eliminate the need for a bulkhead box similar to the mirage manifold for the T2 cheers

any alterations to a mini shell ie ]
bulkhead mods, fiberglass flip fronts/ cuttinig inner wings etc is moddifying the chassis so would need legally a check over and possible be put on a q plate

however there are manifolds out there that sit behind the engine under the carb without cutting a standard bulkhead

these manifolds are the T2 turbos not the metro T3 which i am planning to use

Somewhere amongst all the IVA it states that cars over 10 years old are not required to comply, so fitting a box will not be a problem on any Mini.

where abouts can i find out for definate? or would i have to get in contact with the DVLA?

I think it's unlikely you'll have any issues over a bulkhead box, but no one can say for sure. You'd have to decide the risk for yourself. Apart from cost & availability, if you already have a good T3, there are better options now anyway.

The issue would be if they decided to consider the bulkhead modification as sufficient to no longer consider it the same car, but a new one made from it 'n other bits. Hopefully that'd seem as ridiculous to them as it does us, but who knows???

dont think thats right mate, wouldnt want my car crushig or insurane invalidating without seeing that in black and white

thats all i m worried about i want the car to be fully legal so that i no i ll be ok no matter what happens to the car or if something gets questioned at an MOT or something

i wouldnt put a box in thewn in my opinion, legally you have to have an iva inspection and as its cutting out next to two main mounting points for the front subframe could be a bit dodgy!

...10 years applies to cars that haven't been UK registered - i.e. the classic Jags 'n Astons of the "well connected".

That's a valid concern, but it's something that would concern an MoT tester, as much, if not more than an IVA inspector. Since it's how they put the ERA Turbos together, there's a good argument it's not a problem if it's done properly.

Ye i am going to have a look at an engine in situte and see if it would be possible to make a custom manifold that would mount the turbo far enough from the bulkhead and i would preffer making a small resess in the bulkhead to fit it rather than chopping it out and fitting a big box because this would maintain a majority of the bulkheads strength

If you've got the pipe wrangling skills you could copy the Janspeed setup & mount it above the clutch housing.

or sell your big heavy laggy t3 for a tidy sum on ebay and buy a nice small lighter t2 / gt17 that will fit snug and boost nice and early :)
