Now i think i no the answer but have been asked to ask by my farther just so were both on the same page.

now in this pic there is a banjo bolt attached to the front subby with 2 lines going in to it and one out the bottom.

when me and my dad fitted my new one to the subframe (school boy error time as we did it after the engine was in stalled oh my life is it a PITA) and weve tightened it down as much as we can do at the moment. but the banjo union 2 way bit still swivels side to side.

now im guesing its not meant to and that its mean to be solid.

would anyone be able to confirm this

If it is swivelling it will leak badly and you will have no front brakes. There are several possible reasons why it is swivelling.

Firstly, and what I suspect most, the banjo bolt screws into the top end of the brake hose, which may be rotating in the subframe. There should be a toothed lockwasher under the large nut which fixes it to the subframe. Not sure if they were ever used on the Mini, but some similar hoses used a spring clip instead of the nut and lockwasher, which does tend to allow some movement.

Secondly, the banjo bolt has bottomed in the brake hose because it has been stretched by previous overtightening, or is the wrong bolt,

Thirdly, the copper washers, one each side of the banjo, are missing, so again the bolt bottoms without gripping. You really need new washers, every time, although if the old washers are in very good condition they can be annealed to make them soft again, so they will seal.

Don't overtighten the banjo. They break easily because of the large hole up the middle.

I recently overhauled my front brakes and had to deal with these bastard...I mean banjo bolts in the process. They need to be hand tight. I found it fairly easy to access them with one of those ratchet things that lets you go at it from an angle. Can't think of the name....

I seem to recall the front flexi hoses are handed, one side as a deeper threaded hole to accept the banjo fitting.
That may just be the braided hoses set I brought though.

I am surprised. There is no logical reason for them to have to be handed. It is quite possible to make a union which is flat on top to seal against the banjo via the copper washer, and has a cone to suit a flared pipe end in the bottom of the threaded bore. Somerford Mini show the same hose on both sides on their website. But the suppliers of braided hoses, such as Goodridge, perhaps have a limited range of end fittings available, which does not include the special version used by Rover.

Still, another useful thing to know.

I had this problem once also when fitting the braided brake lines. I had no idea that they required to be on the correct side. I made a thread about it here
