just a quick question, if i change the water pump, as mine is a 92 rover mini 998, will it have a bypass hose as i thought (could well be wrong) that the later models didn't

We'll always be here via TMF if you're struggling with it. If you were nearer to me I'd say pop over and we could do it here, but I'm around 1.5 hours from Worcester.

it certainly helps to know that there are plenty of people on TMF to talk to if i'm struggling with it.

Be carefull that the head studs dont pull the threads out of the block.... can often happen like mine which happed last year I re-tapped the threads but its failed again due to this fault. If the threads do strip then only option is to heli-coil/time-cert the block.

Im sure you'll be fine... One hint - Give it all a good de-coke carbed cars suffer from it realy bad.

Im doing mine tomorow night, that's if minispares get there arse in gear and send me the gasket kit I ordered last week. Takes piss but thats another story, buying stuff localy in future where posible even if its loads more money for the same thing.

For anybody wondering, everything is now sorted and Matt's much happier!
I just hope he has no more problems, also did a few daft bits that a garage wouldn't have done!

On the topic, I'm changing over heads and need to firstly get the old one off, but its clearly been a while since the head last came off and the head nuts don't want to move (someone has painted over them too). what would be the best way to go about this? Sorry for the hijack!

Yup, breaker bar & strength!
You might find the stud comes out of the block instead of the nut coming off, don't worry about it.

Well as long as nothing snaps I think I should be fine, what are the chances the studs are seized in the block and will snap before they give? because this happened to my thermostat bolts and was a PITA.

You should be okay, the head studs are of a much better grade than thermostat studs and take a lot more before they break.

I was hoping that, plus the thread in the block isn't exposed to aluminium and the weather like the 'stat. Hopefully shouldn't be too bad then!

Help! I have an mini one 02 plate an apparently my head gasket has gone, there seems to be a internal leak, drives absolutely fine apart from over heating once due to me forgetting to check an top up car with water an radiators gives out only cold air, it's my first car an I'm absolutely clueless about cars, bt my local garage are quoting me ridiculous prices!£1200 for the job?! Is there anywhere I can get the job done cheaper? Your advice would be much appreciated

Oops sorry, yup I thought so too, might get a someone who knows more abt cars than I do to get me another quote, as I feel they must of given me a high quote based on me being a girl an clueless

Definitely give it a go!!!!! 

 

I have not got much mechanical experience and i found it quite easy. The Haynes manual is great and gives you a really clear guide of what to do. Took me the majority of the day as i took it really slow and kept re checking everything.

 

Just make sure you have the right tools :)
