this is kinda off topic, but how come when the italian job destroyed loads of minis its ok, but when top gear ripped the front end off 1 mini (which is repairable) everyone kicks off?? seems abit weird.
because the minis weren't a classic then, they were brand new minis and there were millions on the roads. They were easily replaceable

Surely the answer to that is no? The original film is one of the best ever made (even if three Mini's did go over a cliff) and should never have been 'updated'
There should be a law against remaking classic films, cant think of one that has worked other than financially
The Hitcher...crappy remake
Psycho.....crappy remake
Alfie...crappy remake
And they totaly ruined Karate Kid, Footloose and Planet of the Apes

We should get out the pitch forks and burn Mark Walberg at the stake!
I hate change or modernisation.

Agreed!Yes how dare they make another version of a film, even though it's pretty much unrelated to the original!

Other than the name, the MINI and 'Charlie Croker', there was no similarity to the original at all. As a film it was ok, and obviously nowhere near as good as the actual Italin Job, but remakes rarely are. It's all about the money, and it worked. And the car chase was pretty pants to be honest, and very short! The IJ was known for that Mini chase, the new one isn't.
Just dont watch it!

They really just used the branding and some of the theme/styling of the original, to sell off the back of it's success in both cases. It worked too though! Me and the missus bought a Bini because of my love for the classic mini and sold it less than a year later because we weren't really all that enamoured with it. Like wise, I bought the remake of the Italian Job on DVD when it was released, because of my love of the original film. I watched it once and thought it was OK-ish, but never watched it again!!

I kind of wish they hadn't called it "The Italian Job", as it's actually quite an enjoyable action movie but everyone insists on comparing it to the 1969 original.

It's not a remake, it's not a sequel, and with the except of the start it doesn't even use a proper mini, so maybe they could've named it something else. But, if they'd named it "Gold Heist in Venice" or something, everyone would've been up in arms saying how it was just a poor rip off of the Italian Job.
It's not a great film, and it certainly doesn't match up to the original, but if you treat it like most 'modern' action films, i.e. utter trash, then it's a good fun film!

'A gang of robbers, lead by career criminal Charlie Croker, create the largest traffic jam in Los Angeles history, giving them time to pull off a theft of gold bullion. They get away in their Mini Coopers, which are small enough to drive on sidewalks so they can make a clean get away before the traffic jam clears'
thats the description of the 2003 remake........all you need todo is swap 'Los Angeles' with 'Turin' and that pretty much sums up the 1969 film.

It can't be a remake if it references the original in the script. A remake would exist in a universe where the original never existed as a movie, maybe as a real caper they were copying but since they talk about the movie they know it exists.
When did they make reference to the original movie in it? I do remember when they were planning the job, one of them saying something about "we'll do it like it was in the Italian Job", but I assumed that this was a reference to them blowing the floor away from underneath the loot, in a similar way that they did in the job that they did in Venice at the beginning of the film?? (i.e I assumed that this was the "Italian Job" that they were referring to).... But like I said I only ever watched it once and that was a long while ago now, so I could well be wrong or have missed other references to it.

Same goes for the film

As for the sequel, I'm not sure why they canned it, but if you watch Fast and the Furious 5, I think it was either the reason why the Brazilian Job (storyline too similar) got canned or after it was canned they used the script for FatF 5.
In case you haven't seen in it, I think it's the best of the series. Mostly because it's more of a heist film than following the usual Fast storyline of pink slip races.
The final sequence is off the wall crazy but I enjoyed the movie so I didn't mind.
