They are legal so long as:

1. They are either wired to come on automatically when reverse gear is selected rare manually switched and there is a warning light in the car which is on when the rev. light is on, and
2. The bulb is not greater in power than 21 watt if the light has a reflector.

My rally 'S' has a manually switched rev. light with a warning light. It is a 5" Lucas foglight with a 55 w bulb, but I just don't care!

Might be a silly question, but what do you mean by warning light?

Cheers

Edit: mine comes on automatically so will I need a warning light?

Bugger! Just seen Dan's many posts regarding these lamps on the road. Don't know whether to risk it :P

Don't know what you mean by "risk it" but I've got one on my Mk2, have had for nearly 2 years and I've never had any issues with it. Actually, it's one of my favourite aspects of the car!

By warning light I think a dash warning light. Like you would have an oil pressure warning light you would need a reverse lamp warning light. So when your reversing light is lot up, you have a light illuminate on the dash to show it is functioning.

Because it's on a 1996 and have read it's illegally, but it looks awesome. Just don't want to give plod a reason to pull me. On a mk2 I think you'll be alright anyway

And yeah thought might of been that, wasn't sure though

I was pulled by traffic branch years ago who told me off because it was too bright, ie more than 21 watts. I promised that i'd never use it again officer  ;D  ;D  ;D

Look best somewhere around level with rear number plate, mounted any higher and they just look weird!

Oh really! I was considering fitting one to my other mini, which is a "97!

There are some people on here running black and silver plates on pretty late cars with no issues. I think you would be seriously unlucky to run into problem with a reversing lamp.

You are correct to be concerned and to have read up about it though, makes a change!

If you want to be legal put a 21watt bulb in, should be able to modify a baseplate from standard bulb to mount one in. I have one on my mk2 cooper but never wired it up as I just liked the look of it, the roof lamps can look good as well

I've got one to put on my roof rack as well :P don't know the difference, but got a wft576 and bought a wlr576 recently. why are they different? One has clear lens, other is patterned. Fog and spot? The one with patterned lens is one on my boot and clear lens one will just be for show

When I mounted the spot light I mounted it in a converted mk3 boot (so the single skin like the mk1).

I am far to nervous to go drilling holes in a double skin mk2 boot lid

I'll get a switch sorted then. Ta

Also where is the best place to buy the correct bulb? Mine currently fitted is a 48 IIRC and the other one doesn't have one in yet anyway
