how do you know if you car is running rich or lean??? and also this may sound silly but what do you
adjust the valve clearances to? is there some sort of guage or is what.??

Take out a spark plug. If it is black then your running rich, white and your lean. It should be a light brownish colour. The Haynes manual shows it very clearly. If you don't have one yet is well worth the purchase. It also clearly explains adjusting valve clearances, but If you need to know quickly then a search will bring up the correct procedure.
