My initial idea was to build a nippy 998 but I have been offered a 1100 engine an gearbox so that has now become my engine project

THE HEAD
I haven't decided what to do yet either get the 202 head modified or save up an buy a modified head form a good dealer as not sure on cost to get standard head mofified vs part exchange

But will be using 1:3:1 roller rockers

ENGINE

I'm going to compleatly strip down the engine
Clean it all up
Will put all new gaskets bearings ect in
Along with a Kent 286 cam kit
New oil and water pump
All new timing gear (the one with the double chain can't remember the actual name )

GEAR BOX
I think I will leave the gear box and diff as standard as can't afford a straight cut or LSD
And not really Nesserary for a road car

I will be using a hif38 with itg ram air kit
Im getting a custom exhaust made once engine is fitted but will attach to a LCB

i think that a 286 cam in a 1098 is a bad idea, that cam has a power band of 2000-7500rpm, 1098 engines really dont like being revved much over 5,500 rpm so that cam would be basically useless, and far too lumpy for a small bore road engine, if you want a revvy engine then go for a 998.......not a 1098.

Ok on that noat what is the ideal cam for a 1098cc
I thought of the 286 or 276 as in the yellow bible it says a cam with as much as 280* produces quiet acceptable results even down the low end of the rev range

i would go for a 276, if you go for a 286 you will loose all of the 1098's low down characteristics power and all of the power will be higher up the rev range which the 1098 engines do not like at all, this would mean that you have to really rev the engine to get the power out of it and the crankshaft would soon fail, a 276 is a more sensible cam for the 1098 but it will still be cammy lower down the rev range but not as bad as a 286.

the engine will be better than standard with the standard head but personally i would put a 940 (1275 head) on it, but you will probably need to pocket the block to clear the exhaust valves but that isnt hard to do.

read philip g cadwells thread on the 1275 eating 998, i'm sure that there are good pics of the block that he pocketed, just dont go too far down the bore and use the head gasket as reference, you dont have to pocket down much anyway .

So if I use a 1275 head on my 1100 will it need skimming
All I have to do is pocket the block
And what alternatives are there if I don't pocket the block what other head could I use

One other thing
If the Kent 276 is the absolute max for a 1098 I'm asuming a 266 or a mg metro can would be a better choice
In just thinking that to keep cost down I could use the mg metro cam I'm just in sure on results

the 1275 head wont need skimming to fit the 1098 engine, the only other alternative is the 12G 295 cooper head, these do need a lot skimmed from them to fit the 1098 engine and they are expensive to buy secondhand (over £100 in most cases) the MG metro cam works well in the small bore engines and the same goes for the 266.

So specs could be
1098
12g940
266/276 cam
Hif38

yes, also check the crank/shell bearings for wear, also the pistons and bores as these engines are notorious for burning oil, and you may as well fit a new oil pump while its in bits.
