my mot tester told me that as long as the switch isn't there either, they can't test it for it to fail

But if you can, I'd make your own. You could make it fully hidden behind the lamp, and get the kick angle correct.

That's actually not a bad idea! Presumably you just have to take the wiring from the fog light to the reverse light on the drivers side and change it to a red bulb?

But most cars have the fog light built into the rear light cluster don't they?
