'tis higher on the inner two.....coincidence?

Hard to tell until it's run in. I would definitely try a little more advance and higher idle speed, but like I said, I'm no engine tuner.

could it be my weber box is too small? There is about an inch of clearance all around and two inches behind

Nah, I doubt it's too small. When you think about it really, it only needs to have enough clearance around the carb to ensure that the airflow into the box is greater than the airflow into the carb......I guess.

could my idle jets be too big or too small? it seems to smoke lots too. is this due to the engine still needing to be run in? it smells like fuel and oil... stem seals are new. whole head has been re-done too... it must be carb. it isnt firing on 1 and 4 much at all!

where abouts are you/the car?

Is there anyone you know that could pop along and have a look?

It's possibly carb setup, but not definitely. Your compression test, I assume you did them with all four plugs out? What position was the throttle in when you did them?

Im in Cape Town! still need to set the carb up properly.

compression test was done with all the plugs out, yes. and the throttle was fully closed with no choke either. What difference does this make during the test?
