What's the opinion of the wise people of TMF on the current situation developing over the FIs? Argentina PM is now taking it to the UN claiming that Britain is militising the dispute.

Argentina has no real claim to the islands other than proximity. I think the key thing is the islanders themselves want to remain British, but they have self-rule and are independent.

I think it would be better if the Islands were independent & regarded as an international responsibility. They could be regarded the same a Kuwait when Saddam invaded. But do they have enough oil :goaway:

I'd also imagine the Argies are more interested in the large chunk of territorial waters that go with them, and this Olympic year is a better time than usual to push your agenda on the international stage.

There are 2 of 'em though so we could have one each, I don't think the sheep would mind.

Yeah I think they are more interested in the waters to be honest.

The islanders should be allowed to choose. They want to stay under British control but remain independent for governance etc. I don't think the UN will do anything about it at the moment. The Argies need to get back in their box in this one and accept it.

All about the oil.
That is why we are taking such an interest in Syria too.

Spent 6 months there and loved it, the local people want to be British and will strive to remain British.

All said and done should it not be the needs/wants of the people.

* Cynical head on* All about the oil.

There is already a military presence there. I was there for the 25th anniversary and we had the Navy 'pop' in then too.

The sheep are some of the most expensive in the world too - very expensive when you accidentally hit one on the road. >_<

Funnily enough the 'atmosphere' on and around the 25th anniversary was a bit heightened too. Made my time there a bit more interesting.

Unlike my good self the Argies seem to remember anniversaries.

Just wondering why it is anything to do with Argentina on which British citizen visits British Soveriegn territory. Territory which has been British continuously since around 1815, which is long before most of the people running Argentina decendants climbed off the boat in Argentina.

I think it's pretty funny that they are complaining that someone in the military turned up in uniform for work

William isn't even in a fighting, or defensive role. He is search and rescue.

There's no foundation to the rubbish being spouted off by the Argentinian government.
