i think its an arden head anyway

basically ive had a pipeline dream of putting a turbo on my 998 mini for a while now but been told by a friend today that "you dont want to turbo it, what you want is an 8 port"

"yes but arnt they expensive?"

"not if you know someone who has one" :D

so if i get offered an 8 port in the near future what should i do if its for reasonable money? i quite like the idea of it over turboing

its still going to be more expensive than going turbo, the Arden heads are always expensive be it a new cast or an old one. It all depends on your budget anyway, but as an easier and cheaper option have a look at 7 port heads, they have the main benefit of 8 ports as each cylinder gets its own inlet port, but without the difficulty of building an 8 port which needs more modifications. Depending on how much power you want a turbo could be a better option.

well at the moment im assuming the head is complete with work done to it where as if i was to turbo it i would be doing as much as i can myself in terms of fabricating

remember with the arden that you'll need a special cam,

you unlikly to get an arden head S/H for much under a grand, on top of that you'll need the exh, inlets, carbs, Head studs, pushrods, plus you'll need to pocket the block it all adds up....

Well they need a specific cam and push rods for starters, also different rockers, and of course a specific exhaust manifold. You will want someone to build the engine for you really too. As for turbo there isn't necessarily any fabrication work required, it depends what manifold, down pipe and inlet pipes you use.

also when somone says "you want to...." it actually means "I want to but cant afford too or dont know how to..." which means you probably cant either!

yeah i see what you mean about the 8 port all adding up, id have to see what i get offered first with the 8 port, as for the turbo i already have the carb and i would be making my own exhaust system including manifolds, would just have to source smaller turbo so i dont have to modify the bulkhead, but at the moment the car is awaiting paint anyway thats why i thought wich ever i go with i could source the parts over a fair bit of time

i just like the idea of an 8 port though its something different

Won't cost 15k to build a 8 port.

Yeah 10k+ if you want a full race engine, but for a spec that is road usable i would think 5-8k all built is a better estimate.

I'm probably completely wrong about this but I didn't think you could fit the 8 port to a 998. Don't the big ends hit the cam?
