Got a fiesta tdci 1.4 (peugeot derived engine i believe?) to do some work on someone, came in for a service and for me to investigate an oil leak on the top of the engine and a "tft tft tft" noise, and owner reckons it feels a bit sluggish. Im a bit stumped, as i hae virtually no experience with diesels.

Basically, done the service, investigated the oil leak, which i found to be a split turbo-inlet hose, so siliconed and taped it, (will get a new one tommorow) to eliminate that from the noise im trying to find, but the noise is still there, its rythmatic with the engine, tft's about 3times a second on idle. Ive had the air filter casing off so i could have a look at the injectors, incase the seals were leaking, but they didnt appear to be.

Took it out for a road test, turbo gives more of a "kick" when it kicks in, im guessing thats due to the leaking boost hose now being sealed. But the chuffing noise is still there, underload too, any ideas please?

dont know that engine personally, but chuffing noise on diesels can be the copper washers which are on the bottom of the injectors.

Look for black carbon type crystals around the injectors. maybe a spray of leak detector would confirm.

Done the ones on my volvo, hardest bit was removing the injectors as they were carboned in. Dont damage the injector, they aint cheap! i used a wire wheel on bench grinder to clean to shaft (no where near the end of the injector) and a screw driver with some wire wool stuff in the hole. New copper washer and refitted, bingo :)

I was going to say injector seal but you say you've checked them. Might be worth changing them anyway, shouldn't be expensive.

Mmm, i said that to the owner, but he reckons they were changed 7k miles ago, less than a year ago, i think its them too, but it looked pretty clean there, saying that, i was looking for it to be wet there, not black carbon, so ill have another look tommorow and get some leak detector spray, is it called anything specific?

They dont seem very good cars to me, my mums got a 56 plate tdci too, and weve had a few issues with that.

It wouldn't be wet, it goes all crystalised especially on plastic covers & things.

i would recommend changing the injector seals aswell, ive seen it a few times on the peugeot 1.4-1.6 litre engines, seems to be a common problem with them.

Apparently (as above) this engine suffers from blown copper injector seal's

so would be a good place to start

had this on a 1.4 fiesta Diesel at work. as jordie said, the seals had degraded and was chuffing diesel out, carbon every where

and the 1400 t.diesels are slow anyway >_<

Yes, i think ill have to replace them, should be fun explaining to the guy that im going to do them, he seems fairly adiment that theyre not the problem as they were only done last year :s , he didnt like it when i told him that means naff all

Just had a readup on the internet about changing the seals, sounds a bit fiddly and complicated to me, best grab some seals from ford (would people reccomend main dealer ones?)

Thanks guys

Once you've replaced the pipe take it for a good run with lots of boost, it'll smoke like anything as it's probably been overfuelling for a while!

My mondeo split a turbo pipe, took a couple of good blasts to clear it out!

Might be worth putting some fuel treatment stuff in there afterwards, give it a good flush out.
