I've managed to destroy my 1995 Cooper SPI engine such that it's going to be cheaper to buy a replacement than have it repaired. How much do I need to worry about getting a replacement SPI? I.e. if I get any old 1275, will it be fittable in my SPI Mini?

Edit:
I'd like to stick with SPI if possible, so I don't know if getting a carbed engine and moving the injection parts over is a thing or not...

I still haven't sorted this and sadly didn't notice R1minimagic's reply until it was too late! Does anybody have an answer to the original post?

Thanks,
Luke

Do get this confirmed, but as far as I'm aware the Spi engine is basically just a carb engine with a different fuelling system attached. It wasn't until the twin point models were introduced that the dizzy was removed and therefore the design of the engine block was changed. So you should be fine with an earlier engine, although depending upon the age of the donor engine, you might need to make some minor modifications because of the different location of the heater take off etc.

The other bonus with using an earlier carb engine, would be that according to MOT regulations where an earlier engine is fitted to a later car, the car then only has to satisfy the emissions test for the age of that engine. Meaning that you wouldn't have to pass the stricter Cat emissions test any longer and could actually legally loose the Cat altogether if you so wished.

R1minimagic may still have an spi engine as he is constantly breaking coopers :D
