
1098 Fast Road Help

Im a novice on the mini engine so would need some help and advice,
So my question is what kind of set-up / work should i do? Il buy whats needed to do it but i dont have a stupid large budget.
As it is the head has been skimmed 30thou and it has dished pistons thats all i can say. And it came out of a T-reg.
Il need advice on cam, carb, exhaust set-up, clutch and flywheel to use e.t.c

Go for a torquey cam rather than a revvy one because you dont want to rev a 1100 too much - the cranks snap if you hold it above about 6k for a prolonged period
However they can make excellent torque with the right setup - try a ACD RT maybe
Carburation - hif44 or twin hs2's would be good.
Ligtening the flywheel is primarily to make the car 'revvier' not necessarily a good idea in a 1098 but some limited lightening/ balancing would be good

The head on the engine is the 12g202 (think thats right) is that any good with the right work? I want to keep the engine simple as im a novice to the mini engine and in putting engines together full stop!

AC Dodd does a range of camshafts, the RT is Road Torque as opposed to RS - Road sport ;)

the 202 is an 'alright' head. The difference between that and the 295 head really is the difference in nominal cc as the inlets on both are 30mm, exhaust 26mm. The 295 is easier to modify, however personally i would measure first, pocket the block if necessary and fit a 12g940 head. That way you get 33.2mm inlets and 29mm Exhausts valves as standard which will be perfect for a fast road application. Least cost and hassle really. You could even do the pocketing DIY.

Can i alter the valves in the 202 head to suit, for example if i get it converted to unleaded could the valves then be alterded to suit at the same time?
Excuse the questions, doesnt mean im ignoring the answers just trying to understand LOL

The amount of man hours required to get rid oo that much metal and it is a closed chamber head rather than open chamber anyway.
Yes in theory you could do this.
However, you could pick up a 12g940 head (1275) for alot less money than the costs for the work outlined above.
Err pocketing the block is where you 'cut away' a portion to stop the exhaust valve hitting the block due to the higher lift. i think MRA do it for £50. You can do this yourself.
Alternatively you could get a machine shop to sink the exhaust valves into the head to alleviate the problem

Well tonight im going to start to pull the block down and just have a fiddle. When i have so free time i will speak to an engine builder i know and he may help a bit! Hes cut some valves into an Escort rs head for me before so he may be able to do it that way.
With regards to cam, if i use the above what rocker gear do i want?
Where is the best place to buy engine parts, i.e nuts studs, gaskets, components?

regards to gaskets you use a 1275 one (BK450), however on the block it is necessary to block one of the water passageways to prevent head gasket failure. Not heard of any/experienced issues with sealing area to bore size problems

Also what distributor would i need?
And as for the carb set-up id love twin hs2's but do they come at a cost?? Could a weber be cheaper or would it be far to overkill?

Worst case scenario you get a slot drive oil pump.
That way you get a new oil pump aswell
Oh and its £15.
Not really a massive expense
