People must be getting so annoyed with me i post something new allllll the time sorrrryyyyyyy.

My spotlights are currently wired into the full beam with a seperate switch to turn on two extra spotlights.

I would rather have them wired into a seperate push switch. Does anyone know how to rewire them from the full beam to a new switch?

Bascially where are they currently wired to?

Hope i make sense :(

Thanks

Ben

They have to be wired so they are turned on and off by the dip switch along with the main beam. That's the law, they should be like that on all cars. The ones that can be switched by themselves must be fogs. Fogs and spots are not the same thing, they have a different beam.

Can I not have them on a switch as well? It would only be for display use and at shows. Not like I'd drive around on a public high way with just spotlights on. I swear you can have seperate spotlights on land rovers and off road worthy vehicles but used on the street.

Yeah you can have them on a switch, all you need to do is follow the wires from the sportlights to a relay and then instead of switching the relay with full beam just wire it to the switch.

Nope, they must be wired in such a way that they cannot be switched on under any circumstances apart from with full beam.

All lamps on the car fall into specific categories. Spot lights / driving lights / pencil lights or whatever else you might call them are actually optional extra main beam lights, because they aren't side lights and don't have a fog or dipped beam. All main beam and optional main beam headlamps must be wired like this:

10. Electrical connections–
(a) Every main-beam headlamp shall be so constructed that the light emitted therefrom–
(i)can be deflected at the will of the driver to become a dipped beam, or
(ii)can be extinguished by the operation of a device which at the same time either–
(A)causes the lamp to emit a dipped beam, or
(B)causes another lamp to emit a dipped beam.
(b) Where a matched pair of main-beam headlamps is fitted they shall be capable of being switched on and off simultaneously and not otherwise.

You can have a switch to isolate a pair of optional lamps so that they don't come on with the others, but the dip switch must still switch them all off at the same time.

Yeah - but be careful because after '89 those relays were re-routed to work the machine guns and tyre slashers. :ohno:

I have to admit that on my rally cars I always use a 2-position switch for all spotlights so that I can use just the spots without the heads if I need to.
It's never been an issue with MoT testers, rally scrutineers or anyone else.

To be fair i dont think my MoT tester really know much about the laws :P
I might just wire it up, Switch and full beam.
Whats the worst that can happen?
