1990 998 rover mini city. Stage one kit fitted.

I took the mini for its MOT the other day and the emissions didnt get tested as the exhaust had a leak, I have now fixed the leak and am taking it for its retest.

As it couldnt be tested the first time i am curious as to how I can get the emissions down as there is no room for it to fail on this test. Any ideas?

Your car should not be tested for emissions as it's a carb engine and is too old to warrant an emissions check.

They should have tested the emissions the first time, irrespective.

A holed exhaust can allow air to be sucked in,
causing artificially low readings.
Where a vehicle has an exhaust holed to the extent
that MOT failure is warranted, the emissions should
be rechecked when the exhaust is repaired even if
the vehicle does not leave the testing station in the
meantime. Owners should be made aware that any
emission readings taken with a leaking exhaust
might be incorrect.
Holes not justifying MOT failure do not normally
have a significant effect on the constitution of the
exhaust gases at the tailpipe and can be ignored

It dos not say in there that the test should be aborted

This is so wrong

any vehicle manufactured after 1st August 1975 is required to achieve basic emissions limits. A vehicle manufactured in 1990 is required to pass an emissions test with the limits of 3.5%CO and 1200ppm HC

In the absense of any testing gear, wind the nut under the carb upwards anticlockwise when looking from above, if the mixture gets to weak you will hear the engine start to hunt and start popping on tickover, just wind it back down half a turn or so from there. should be ok for the MOT till you can set right.

What purpose does removing the air filter serve? Does it make the engine run more lean?

No, it ensures that the engine sucks in all the road crap, so that it'll eventually fail emissions on Hydrocarbons

But it does say that the emmissions test should be carried out once a repair has been made.

That's the adjustment for an HS carb, doesn't a 1990 car have an HIF? Which would mean the mixture screw at the side should be screwed inwards to lean out the mixture.

Yes this will make the engine run leaner as there is less restriction into the carb. It will also make the car noisier.

It says rechecked, if it's being rechecked it must have been checked in the first place.

Pretty sure it was the 1275's got the HIF from about 1992 on, this is a 1990....998 should be HS4 unless its been changed

My mistake, only the Coopers got the HIF in 1990, all 998s had the HS4.
