Just bought a mk2 mini cooper, which came fitted with twin hs4's with trumpets and no air filters! The car will be used very little, can anyone advise wether I should fit cone filters or socks over the trumpets or just keep it as is? The car is original with period tweaks. Also will the carbs need setting up again if filters are fitted.

Personally I would fit air cleaners of some description on any vehicle that will be used on the roads today. Others may differ.

Fit air filters now before any more damage is done.
Driving a car (race or street) without filters is like driving around pouring sand into your air intake. Your engine will experience damage. Though somewhat expensive, buy a pair of K&N cone filters. In the end they will probably cost less than buying the original intake elbows, filters, and filter housing. They will certainly cost you less than an engine rebuild.

i would defiantly fit filter, socks preferably. one of my mate build a hot 1275 after a year of running he decided that it you go better with a trumpet and no filter at all, he ruined the engine in less than months and then blew it up on the way back from Germany with me driving.
