Recently got this cylinder head back. Paid for it tO be ported and polished etc, new guides, valve seats cut for large inlets.

What do people think of the finish? I wasn't sure if it should look smoother and more polished than it does. Obvious I don't want to name the person who has done the work, but thought if people thought it wasn't up to scratch then I could use people's opinion as something to go back to him with.

how much did you pay?

Looks to me that the person hasnt got the first clue how to port a head, its all about shape rather than riping out maerial, the most ipmportant points being just before the valveseats (about 1/4-1/2") and the seats themselves. it wouldnt suprise me it that head flowed worse than standard.

I do still need to take it back to him for final cc checks along with the block, but I was very worried when I saw it. I will have to mention to him about it and try and get him to finish it off. I haven't paid for it yet though, which I suppose is some consolation.

Anyone else have an informed decision? The more people I hear from the more backup I have behind me. Thanks, Howard

The ports certainly have been enlarged and it looks like they have taken the time to do some port matching to the manifolds. I would say that they needed to do a bit more blending of the cuts to smooth them out a bit. The tool chatter in the ports looks unpleasant but probably isn't as bad as you think. Still, I would expect someone doing this for a living would have blended those cutter marks using abrasive drums. While it can be nice to have the chambers polished to a fine finish, you really don't want the ports themselves polished too much. A bit of turbulence is supposed to aid in fuel/air mixing. All of the porting and polishing should probably have been completed before re-cutting the valve seats. In the third picture down it looks like they did some of this work after fitting the new valve guides... have they damaged the nose of the guide shown on the right?

Wht I'm mst concerned about is how mych material has been removed just below the valve seats, it looks to me like there isnt enough there to get an efficient shape when the seats are cut.

The valve seats are the original, was a late head I provided with. As for the builder he is a reputable engine builder, and prepares race engines. I did notice that about the guide in the last port, is this likely to cause a problem?

If you are being asked to pay more than about £100 for that then you are being over-charged. To finish it properly the guides need to come out, which means a light 'kiss' on the valve seats when new ones are fitted.
The basic chamber re-shaping doesn't look to bad, but the throats look very poor. The throats don't need to be 'mirror finish', but they should be shaped and blended to give optimum flow just before the valve seats.

Try triple that, but as mentioned, not paid yet.

New Guides have been fitted.

Yes, but to finish it properly those guides will have to come out. Then more new ones will be needed as once removed they can't be re-fitted. After fitting them the seats will need to be very lightly 'kissed' with the seat cutter to ensure they are accurately centered.
