don't see why he would of given it back to you if it wasn't finished?
what did he actually say when he gave it to you?

He said there you go, go lap the valves in and keep me posted. You have a very nice head there, 3 days work.

If that took 3 days he must have had some long tea-breaks!
IMHO you'll end up getting someone else to complete the work and then he'll have to fight you for the money. Get the head independently assessed by an expert, not the person who will be completing the work, and get it in writing. You might have to pay for such a professional assessment, but it could well be worth it. There is a lot to do to get that head right, at least a full days work, maybe more, plus re-machining the valve seats when the next new set of guides is fitted then finally skimming to get the CR to what you want. Say 15 more hours in total.

I will speak to him and see if he is willing to accept that the job isn't finished and give him a chance to finish it. If not I will be speaking to someone else and getting them to finish the job.

if he thinks that's finished i wouldn't give it back to him to finish. to be honest i think your best bet is to cut your losses, get another head and just leave that one in case he tries to chase you for the money for it. if he does just give him the head back.

******* me, that is truely shocking.

Ask for a standard head back and don't give him a penny.

That's abysmal to say the least. It looks very amature. As already said, finish isn't everything, but there's no way I'd send any of my heads out looking like that.
If this guy's a "professional engine builder" there's no way he should be turning out work like this.

Does anyone have any photos of inside their inlet/exhaust ports that I can compare it to. I have searched but not found anything that shows the port in detail. I'm not malicious so am not going to name and shame the person until he has had a chance to put it right. Any photos much appreciated.

You don't say how much you paid which I suspect tyhis might be part of your issue;

http://www.mlmotorsp.../topic,4.0.html

This is the sort of work you get for around £700, with detailed paint job and freshly surfaced top and bottom & chambered to give the chamber capacity required. The head would be complete fitted with seals springs and valves, in my case I always supply the head with 2 valves out so that the customer can inspect before funds are paid.

I haven't paid yet, but been quoted £300. Labour no parts. Also, who is there Kent way that would be able to give a professional opinion on the standard of work? Or do you think MED or similar would give an opinion from the pictures I have?

That is some good work there by Turbo phil, a good example of the standard of finish required on a head. For £300 you are just not going to get that, not enough money for the hours needed.

I think the problem is here, possibly a cheap job. No head done by a company (ie sensible hourly rates inc pensions etc) for £300 can have enough time in it to be a good standard.

Well i know TurboPhil gave me a very competitive price, but was in the midlands so was more convenient where I ended up going. Didn't realise what else was out there before committing to one. Has also done my block engineering, which appears to be to a good standard. Just the head which has been a let down.
