It was indeed very odd! I agree that no amount of description alone, without pictures, would have led to a successful diagnosis.

I wonder how it got like that?

down to my own fault didint realise the seal had metal in it as the rubber seal was jammed in tight and a mess i used the stell wool drill bit to clean it up. whoopsie
