a rebore and pistons to give you the plus 0.080" mentioned above probably around £300
cam shaft I'd guess at £100 or more
exhaust manifold filters , needles etc another £180
then theres things like gaskets, oil pumps, probably good time renew bearing shells, thrust bearing.
You will probably be well into your budget. But you would finish with a near enough a recon'd engine
The other option is hit ebay again do your homework and see if you can pick up another 1275 which will give you around the same sort of power as the perked up 998. But its a gamble because you won't know its history or condition
I'm sure I've seen somebody on here offering 1275's when people have enquired.

I think you would be lucky pick up a 12g295 head for less than £100, even then it may need work.

Yes, that looks about right price-wise. If you could find a 1275 from, say, a 1275 Metro (not necessarily a Metro GT) which did not need a re-bore and which would take a hone and some rings, then re-grind the crank and fit new shells, oil pump, cam and followers you have a good basis for a start. The 12G940 head which is standard on all 1275 engines is a good head to start with and can be improved quite easily, although full gas-flowing is more expensive.
Look for a block, crank pistons and head assembly for a sensible price and you'll be pleased with the result and it should be within your budget. Even without a 'demon' head you'll get over 65 bhp easily and have loads of mid-range torque. After that, if you want more power, just get a better head.
Go for an HIF 44 carb or an HS6 on a Metro alloy manifold. You'll need a better exhaust system too.
Personally I wouldn't bother with the 1098 lump. They don't like to rev and by the time you've spent money on it you might as well seek out a 1275.
