Hi everyone, new to this forum, just want to say what a great resource this forum is and thanks for all the great information.

I have a 84 Mini 25 ,its engine is standard as far as i can tell. Im considering putting on a stage one kit on it for the usual reasons, but my question is a rolling road session really needed. The reason being there is none available near me. I was speaking to a guy and he says he can tune it with a RR. He has some sensor he says and can get the fuelling right. Is he right can i fit the kit and have him tune it well enough without a RR session?

You don't need to have to put the car on a rolling road for a stage one tune as its mainly bolt on bits and doesn't make drastic changes to your engine. As for fueling and timing, you can usually do this at home with the right equipment or have some one do it for you if they know what there doing, the RR isn't critical in order to get the engine running happily. Rolling road tunes allow you to get the absolute peak power out your engine. Depends what you want really,

Yay for another 25! and yeah It shouldn't be too hard to set up the engine again after all the mods are on, usually only needs a new needle for the carb and then adjustment and you're away!

Oh good thats great, what should the tune up consist of? Fuelling, timing, ignitintion// distributor, anything else? Im happy fitting the kit and that but i think id rather let someone qualified to tune it. As regards the exhaust system im not looking for anything noisy maybe a nice little burble noise if ya know what i mean? Any suggestions ? I was looking at the millenium twin box, would this be a good one and not noisy?

Yeah your stage one should be ok to fit yourself, as for the tune... It's always good to learn how to do it for future, but if this chap has the kit already it will be easier to let him do the work. Just gotta get it running sweet, if its a carbed engine it shouldn't be to hard to get it running right, it wont need a great deal of change for a stage 1 anyway. I couldn't comment on the exhaust, I like loud ones

I've got the single box center exit maniflow silencer on mine, lovely burble on it and not to loud.

My sisters got the rc40 big bore center exit, lot louder.

Yea its 998 carbed, a little flyer so it is. Yea might get him to do it and help him with it. God im after learning so much since i found this forum. Cant beat getting your hands dirty for satisfaction.

This might be a stupid question but is ignition timing and engine timing two completley different things?

2 sorts of timing

cam timing which is the setting of the cam so that the valves open and closed at a specified time in relation to the crank position

ignition timing...setting the spark to happen at the optimum time

Ah thanks thats as i thought. Should i have both checked as i am unsure of engine history etc?

Engine timing is trickier to do, you need to have access to the timing chain so its an engine out jobby as far I'm aware. Your ignition on the other hand just requires a timing gun and can be done just by running the engine.

Unless your fitting a new cam, no need mess with cam timing , just worry about fuel mixture and ignition timing when fitting the stage 1.

If you're not familiar with carb and ignition settings, you need to rolling road your car after fitting the so called stg1 kit.
Be sure you're going to a good trusted RR, there are many cowboys out there.

Ah right spot on thanks il get fuel and ignition timing done after and hope that does the trick.

Another quick question if i may? The mini sits about 2 inchs higher in the rear, any ideas why?

maybe front cones are worn out, or front knuckle joints worn !!!

long shot are there hi-lo adjustable trumpets fitted, If so rears maybe adjusted high

There is a bit of "knocking" noise goin on in the front at low speeds over bumps and that, would that suggest some thing worn at the front?
