Well today was cold, but I did manage to sort the stepper motor out, somehow the plunger had got under the cam and had been bent, looking at it I can't see how this was possible but that's what had happened.
Plunger now straigtened out and the whole lot put back together and working. Need to sort out the car running rich still and there seems to be a slight missfire when idling so there may be some kind of electrical problem somewhere.
A big thank you to Mini Sproket for the photo guide to taking apart the stepper motor, made the job nice and easy, better than any haynes manual.
