hi
i have recently put a 1275 metro in my mini (as alreay posted) and ive wired my starter solenoid to the inner wing and not to the one on the back of my pre engaged starter motor and i have then taken a cable to the starter motor! but the starter motor spins but does not pop out and engage with the flywheel?
why would this be?
thanks

I stand to be corrected but i take it the starter on the 1275 has a separate solinoid?

If so then this will need a power supply from the ignition switch, the older inertia starters used the wing mounted relay(solinoid) and i would think you can do away with this if your fitting a pre engaged starter.

Because it's a pre-engaged starter not an innertia one. You need to use the solenoid that is mounted on the starter, when the solenoid closes part of it phyically moves the starter motor drive gear out of the casing and into the flywheel housing. It isn't even fitted with a bendix device which would allow the gear to move under it's innertia at startup as the innertia type does.
