How is this done?

Say on a stage 3 1380 - do you declare every single thing, and to what level? Obviously declare cams and a new head? What about a lightened flywheel? Electronic ignition? The whole thing seems pretty confusing!

What about things that aren't part of the engine, and are only passive parts... Is there any point declaring an upgraded rad?

Thanks in advance!

It's normally just a case of tell them the new engine then
Engine modifications plus 10% bhp etc would cover all aspects

all depends who the insurer is, I wouldn't mention an upgraded rad or electronic ignition because it doesn't really make the car faster or more attractive to thieves.
I think modified car specialists just ask for bhp increase like martin said.

You need to consider how much it will be to replace parts. You may have fitted a top of the range ignition system for example but if undeclared and your engine / car is replaced then you will get a bog stock system in its place or the equivalent in cash.

If its all declared then you are safe, why take the chance with your pride and joy. Why gamble and possibly lose everything.

For example on my old RS i declared the lot, engine, exhaust, induction system, suspension etc plus got an agreed value through the RS owners club that was agreed with the insurance company. All with receipts as well.

On mine, I declared the engine conversion, then also declared that it would have been 110bhp, but I'd spent about a further £1500 on manifolds, throttle bodies, ECU and so on to make it about 150bhp.. they know how much I've spent on it, they know what power (roughly) it's got...... I just asked them whether I needed to list every single mod or just a cost for "engine modifications" your insurer will be the best people to talk to to be honest.

Declaring mods doesn't mean they replace them!!
Every time I insure a car n declare things they always state they will only replace manufactures standard stuff!

I may be wrong with classic/ special insurance but it's deffo the case on normal car insurance

A lot of it is down to agreed value. If you go that route then hopefully you will get as close to what you spent on your mods. Whereas if you insure your car without an agreed value you get what you get.

What did they say to that? I'm assuming most of the specialist insurers are going to work in a similar way.

Out of interest, how much did that much bhp increase your insurance by?

Surely if you don't declare your mods they could invalidate your insurance????

I don't know how much that BHP increased the insurance by as I never insured it with a standard engine. But mine is only about £200 a year anyway.

When I asked about how to declare the mods, she wasn't actually sure, so I just reeled out a list and she grouped them under "engine modifications - £1500", but I've got agreed value and all that jazz.

Yes, not declaring mods WILL invalidate the policy. Insurers will do all they can to wheedle their way out of paying out

Is wheedle a proper word or is it a Matt word that I just made up? :ermm:

Out of interest, and based on non engine bits.

Would you declare:
Changing to black bumpers from chrome?
Changing to clear indicators?
Changing from silver grill slats to black?
Adding belt straps to bonnet?
Changing to halogens from sealed beams?
Adding a GB badge to the rear?
Changing wipers from black to chrome?

and many more similar tiny mods...

Im just interested... all seem pretty N/A to me, But what would you do?

I bet its not long before we hear about insurance voiding cover after a crash because of a forest fresh hanging from the mirror.
