Unless you have a lot of patience dont touch a 3g/3gs i dont know what the 4 is like but i changed the back on my 3g when it cracked around the dock connector, took me a good few hours, very fiddly around the volume rocker and then spent 30 mins getting the screen connections in properly so that it worked perfectly, and in the end i have marked the bezel around the screen and the sim card tray isnt as flush as it used to be, im not worried as i will have to change the back again when i come to sell as its cracked again! by the way blue looks ace!

Sounds like something went wrong for you.
Changing a back on a 3G should take under 1 minute

It won't be an apple warranty it will be with the company it's self.
And no my warranty is now void but I have insurance which covers it

The back of a 3g holds everything its opposite to i4's on 3gs you unscrew the 2 screws at the bottom, then screen out, then logic board, battery stuck on the back, then all the buttons are mounted on the back casing, so unless you are using an ak47 then it will take longer than a minute ;)

If all you want is a white one, what about advertising in various places for a swap? I'm sure there is someone out there who wants a black one not a white one?

Looks good. I daren't do anything like that to mine, I'll loose something. And I really cannot do fiddly jewellers screwdrivers etc; i'll stick to the 1/2" AF spanner ;D :D

iPhone 3g/S are not worth muckin around with unless your just changing a screen. I tried to re-build one a friend smashed up and it was stupidly complicated.

iPhone 4/S is very easy to work on if you take the time and lay out parts in the correct order you take it apart in. Instructions are avaliable at ifixit.com and they are very good if anyone fancies having a go
