Going to change from the standard two clock, up to the 3 clock, but the new (second hand) 3 clock has about 10k more miles, how do i go about winding it back down to the correct miles that my car is at?

cheers

you dont have to, just write down your current and correct milage, then for insurance or any other reason take the original number away from the current one.

Can you not wind the clock up through zero and then keep going up to the mileage you want?
I've heard of 'guys' :shifty: using drills to do this

i guess that would work. but it would forever be on my mind, that the mileage is shown as wrong, would bring out the OCD in me. or knowing me id probably loose the bit of paper i wrote down the original mileage on :proud:

Check the search feature here. Hopefully it will reveal the old threads on the topic. This comes up a couple of times a year and the legal aspects of what is required are typically discussed in those threads.

If you have several weeks to hold an electric drill you can advance the odometer that way. However, it simply is not practical. I typically put the math in my replies to these threads but not today. Suffice it to say that it can literally take weeks to advance an odometer over 100,000 and back up to some lower value using an electric drill.

When I changed from a two clock to a three clock set up I kept my original speedo/fuel and temp gauges. If you are careful you can swap over the speedo/fuel/water gauge units. The tacho slides off of the other gauges and can be slid onto your existing parts. Care must be taken not to damage the printed circuit when dismantling the parts.

Have a look at the diagram on the link to see the parts.

Yes you can build your existing speedo into the 3 clock unit. but it is also very easy to adjust the milometer. but I dare not tell you how on an open forum.

Obligatory stupid but true story. And no, it did not happen in the UK. Someone with a typical small car (it was not a Mini) had a speedo failure at about 30k miles, so he obtained a new one (zero miles) and went to his local back street garage to have it fitted. They told him to come back the next week.

When he went to collect the car, it was up on the ramp, wheels dangling freely, engine running at full revs, probably equivalent to about 120mph, surrounded by a huge cloud of smoke, and something like 20k on the odometer. Engine completely ruined of course, as it had missed several oil changes.

At 100mph on the speedo to change the mileage by 100,000 miles will take 1000 hours, thats over 41 days

i found out a way (my dad told me ;D ) if you take the speedo apart so you can see the mechanism you can move the didgets to the left then put it to 000000 and slide them to the right, and hey presto zero miles, worked perfect on mine.

Yes... of course... but for legal reasons, please do not post the method here.
