Hi everyone not been on here alot but always have a look through, I have a few problems with my 1988 mini mayfair, Rebuilt my mini but now I am having trouble starting her when you turn the key she coughs and splutters most of the time she wont start and she makes some really horrible noises.

It sounds like the starter motor is still in place which is stopping the engine starting but i have checked and this is not the case.

Been throughg the whole engine check everything but still no joy, been in the haynes manule front to back but that hasnt helped!!! any ideas guys would be great many thanks

Are the ht leads in the correct order, which should be 1-3-4-2 i believe, anticlockwise around the dizzy.

Have you tried pouring a small amount of fuel in the intake to rule out fuel problems?

check the engine earth strap, a lot of people get to this after checking everything else, if it's a bad connection it causes all sorts of faults.

I replaced it with a new one plus also ran a second one in just to be on the safe side, also redid and check all of the earthing points
