It works like this, in your HU you have 2 types of outputs. The speaker wires that you have connected currently pass through an amplifier in the HU (it's tiny though) and the pre outs (RCA connectors) don't, because they are intended for sending to a seperate amplifier.

They'll happily work together, the signal (unless you tell it otherwise and few HU let you) comes out of every socket at once. Unless you change the balance etc and tell it otherwise (no left noises if you turn off the left side etc.).

Your speakers will work just fine with the sub hooked up.

The remote lead is purely to tell the amp to turn on when the HU does.

On your sub (found the pics) on the low input side, push the slide switch to LPF and assuming the dial on the left of it says 30-250 turn it about half way round, about 110mhz - this tells the amplifier to ignore the higher frequencies as they're not a subs job.

Then turn the Bass Boost setting the f*ck off, because it's bad for you. It's not what it says, you don't want it :P

The "level" dial is most likely what everyone else calls gain, rough set up of this is to turn your HU to 75% volume then turn the dial on "level" until you hear a distortion, turn it back a touch and you're done.

This is really napkin set up stuff, but it shoulf get you started.

From there you can shape the music from the HU with the EQ or whatever it has.

Sounds good mate! Bass boost is off, LPF switched on, and set to around half way, Level dial is about half way too but will tweak if it all works tomorrow! Just to triple check.... (so worried about this haha) this is how it's set up in my mind...

Spot on!

Make sure R- goes to the red sub socket, with L+ going to black of course.

The remote should go to the remote wire on the back of the HU, it's usually blue also. If you haven't got one of those then the powered antenna wire is blue/white most often which should provide the same function - essentially a tiny current when the stereo is on to activate any ancilleries.

Ah, the R- is going to the red sub pocket, i assumed it was red positive like the battery, i shall change these round then... and my HU we pulled out from our land rover discovery so there is alot of unnecessary wires from it, but i bought an electronic aerial that is sitting behind my poorly made dash (which is being replaced next week for a non-rattly one (i saw your sound proofing guide :P) so i will attach the live wire to that or another wire such as the ignition, as i believe my HU is set up wrong to my fusebox as the radio still works even with the ignition off, my dad can help me tomorrow so i'm sure we'll get it working :) thanks so much skortchio, and everyone else who helped me previously!

EDIT: nope, R- is going to black, i followed the cables wrong, thank god i'm paranoid and double checked before i swapped them!

No worries, fella.

With regard to your HU wiring;
Red wire is switched live - something non critical / fuse box connection, ie. not the lights :P
Black wire - Ground.
Yellow(on mine anyway) - constant live. Anything that's always on and again non critical, the interior light is a good option (it's purple/white) to pick up a feed from if you don't want to run from the battery direct.

That will have your stereo come on only when the ignition is on but not lose radio stations etc when it goes off.

Not electronic aerial, powered. One that extends when you turn the HU on ;D

Good luck with it, I'm going to bed now :highfive:

Started this morning, then stopped when the grandparents came round, and it's done! thanks for your help everyone, really pleased with the result in the boot, it makes the music sound so much better without being so loud/distorted that i annoy people :P sorry for the dark pics, but heres the size of it, i still need to add some bracing bars around the edge so it doesnt slide about too much (although it does weigh 2.5 stone)

Also Skortchio, i decided to wire up the sub to a separate switch as the wiring in my car is a bit iffy.... so we couldnt connect it to the radio, but this way i can decide to turn off the sub if i dont want it on a certain song :P just gotta remember to turn it off so i don't kill the battery!

If it works, it works.

Glad it's all in and working dude! Might be worth buying a switch with an LED tip (Maplin sell them) so you can see if it's still on, or better still running the power to it off a switched live :)
