No, running a pipe back to the tank is a bad idea, and your insurance company may not be impressed if there is a fire. It is important to fix the cause of the problem.

It may be worth examining the needle and its seat under the best magnifier you can fine to see if there are any rough spots or wear ridges which might make it jam, and pay close attention to the float pivot too. Not saying that you will actually see something, but they must be sticking for a reason.

Chances are that the problem has gone away, and will stay away for a long time, so the true cause may never be found. This particular problem can be elusive.

It is a modification, and a highly improper one at that, because it is not fixing the problem but bodging around it. Insurance law requires that you declare all "material facts", which includes modifications.

Mine did this all the time too when i was first trying to get my mini running, i cleaned out the carb and fully dismantled everything soaked it in carb cleaner and engine degreaser overnight then i put it all bake together after drying it all off and i polished the valve needle on a fine grade buffing wheel but i dont think you'll need to do that, after all that ran fine never did it again. now im running a hif44 2".
