    Starting My Mini Up

hi guys and girls

Im sure this is a common problem with all mini owners but maybe someone can give me a little advise.

When its wet and damp outside my mini plays up. It starts by having a problem excellerating over say 40mph. when you do accellerate the whole car judders badly. If you slow down then the car still runs fine just about. However when i then try to accelerate again the car judders. So i get down to 20mph and still cant excellerate. I stop for a junction and the car just dies trying to pull off. I think its to do with the distributer or sparks getting wet, maybe both.

currently running a standard engine 1275cc on a rover mini cooper 1990.

Im considering putting electronic ignition kit in the distributer, will this fix it ??

also if is there a mod for the heaters in minis, improving the old one or replacing with something else all together as im forever steaming up.

cheers.

if your mini doesnt have the standard splash guard then wither replace it or make one that looks cool. You could go for a metro electronic ignition setup (very easy). A new set of spark plugs always helps and there cheap enough.
some people on the other hand just put a rubber glove over the distributor, looks pants but it does the trick

Ive had this exact same problem before, with the engine running youll get a shock from the ht leads when wet. I agree with minidaves. new ht leads are the trick. but if for some reason you cant afford any, either do the rubber glove trick or cover each lead with leckie tape, which ever takes your fancy.

then set about a splash guard.

HOME MADE SPLASH GUARD!!
I experienced exacly the same problem and would cause serious problems when doing long motorway journeys. When I realsied the standard splash guard things aren't very easy to get hold of without paying thru my back side I decided to make a 5 minuite homemade boj job to keep me going and to my delight it worked a treat. . . get an old rubber tube and cut a section long enough to cover the front end of your engine (inc. spark plugs) open it up and place it where the original splash guard goes covering the dizzy and the plugs. Attach it howver you can, i screwed it thru on to the splash guard brackets which were still on the engine. Just make sure it's not flapping about.
Doesn't look very cool but sorts a very serious problems + it's easy enough to take off / put on when and as u need it

Surely rubber isn't a very good thing to be putting on a hot engine?! :dontgetit:

Hilarious reply there!!! I think you'll find that coolant hose is not 'just rubber'!!!! The same as fuel hose is not 'just rubber'!!! I give up !!!

I think that stuff will withhold a lot of heat before melting. all that air+water coming thru will cool it down anyway!!! I ve had no probs with it anyway even when on the motorway for 3 hrs (+she must get pretty hot) .... or just get a proper splash guard + sum nice new leads

Hi,
I had the same problem with my mini a couple of months ago, it kept juddering and dying in the wet. My dad fixed it for me :ermm: , i bought a electronic ignition kit (brilliant, definetly recommended), a new distributor cap as mine was slightly cracked, and some new HT leads.
Now when i drive in the wet, no problems at all. Even heavy rainfall. But for extra cover iv got a flora margarine tub over my distributor hee hee, just in case!
