Hello, I have a 1989 mini Mayfair which uses a choke and I was just wondering how can I make it so I don't have a choke on my car ( not a manual one anyway) so its like a later model . Is there a way to do this ?
Thankyou

Are chokes really that bad? :ohno:

You'd have to ditch the carb, and stick a later injection engine in.

That's what I thought, I'll keep it for now then until I do a full rebuild , I didn't want to have to change the engine and wasn't sure if there was a way past it

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with the choke?

When Ford introduced automatic chokes on their cars which had carbs they were so unreliable that you could buy a manual replacement in order that you had a good chance of the car actually starting in the morning. I know I converted my 1972 Cortina 2000GT to manual choke when it was not very old.

I don't understand why the operation of a choke can't be embraced. Simples!

When the engine is cold you pull it out, start the engine, and then push it in when it warms up a bit. What could be easier or more trouble-free?

If it's any harder than that, the carb isn't set up properly!

If you're really hung up on converting to an Automatic choke, there is a version of the HIF carb which does have this. Was fitted to cars like the montego but does need a few other bits a bobs in terms of an electronic control unit and sensors

I don't mind the choke and I'm not a retard I know how to use one, but the choke cable just went so was wondering while I'm doing it if there's a cheap way to change to automatic

Was going to say I'm sure it'd be possible using some gizmo's like electronic servo's connected up to a temperature gauge or timer etc.

Tell you what is bloody annoying! Fitting the dash panel, padded rail, heater etc and realising you haven't done the choke up tight enough so you can't twist and lock it or it just bloody spins, agh!

I like having a choke, make me feel retro, and also gives me the chance to answer the question everyone of my mates ask when they get in my car, so far convinced one that it controlled the turbo, thats why its got a picture of a fan on it, turbos look like that.

and the brake test button, thats the ejector seat, so far no-one has believed me on that :(
