[SA MINI]

i own a 998 auto & 10w40 oil is better for wear & tear on the clutch plates in the gear box
20- 50 oil is better for the a series engine. with the autos you need to change the oil regularly as its lifespan is short being used as hydraulic oil for the box.


most faulty auto boxes will run fine with the wheels of the ground through every gear.
the usual fault is clutch slip in top / forth gear clutch. this clutch is also the reverse gear too.
so does your car slip in 4th gear & reverse on the ground ? or every gear ??

try a stall test ...

find a rev counter and connect it to engine ignition , if you haven't already got one fitted

choc the wheels , on flat ground , get the engine warm , check oil level , apply the hand brake

with foot hard on brake (hold brake through out the test)

put in 'd', put throttle to the floor for approx 5 seconds , note the rev's , release throttle ,

rpm should be steady between 1400 and 1500 , for good gearbox

check your governor linkage is adjusted correctly too if it was a torque converter problem im not sure it would move at all

does your gear box clonk or squeal at all?

SA Mini - its only in 4th gear and reverse yes! sometimes it slips in reverse when going up a slight hill (my drive)

Ok then. In the first image I sent. Look at number 10. This is your top / reverse clutch. This in your case has worn out & therefore slipping

It is not easy.
But it is do able you can get all the parts & tools from Martin @ MRA minis On here. Not the mra website though.
He also does a full gearbox rebuild for you with unrated clutch plates ect. For the £900 mark I think

you can normally purchase a second hand auto for less than £100 this could be the way forward although the same problem will occur in time especial if its not well maintained
although its a shame you could convert it to manual if you dont want to part with the car

where would you suggest get them from? ebay? i did really want a manual from beginning, however this mini came along and i thought it could be a nice, easy fix that would make me appreciate the car more, as i would be spending the money on it. any idea how much a conversion would cost?

Yeah there's a few that come up on here & a some now and then on eBay.

If it was me looking to convert my auto. I would go & buy a rust bucket with a good engine & front subframe. Or you can get auto to manual engine conversion mounts to fit the autos wider subframe. But then strip all the rusty minis manual bits off to fit on yours
