Have a look at graham Sykes, I'm only 16 but asked my sister to run me through a quote as if I had just passed at 18 to get an idea and was continually quoted in the sub 2 grand on a 94 mini 1275. That may sound ridiculous and it is, but when we checked on her 2001 Renault clio 1.2 it was 3500 +

Apparently its to do with the number of clios crashed by young lads is higher than any other small car. I also found with graham sykes that any modification even like different seats/alloys etc. brings the premium down> :P I know crazy!

Oh and my view and the view of my parents are that, it may be extortionately expensive to insure a car for me and my sister, but its a necessity. I can't be the world only mechanic who can't drive lol. Just how my sister learnt to drive and is insured i will be aswel, it may take a little more effort to find the money but its something that needs to be done. Just like the mortgage needs to be paid. Its catch 22 because if i dont get insured i cant get to work to make the money to pay to get insured and if i get insured i cant afford to put petrol in the car to get to work :P....

Im staggered at the sheer greed of these insurance companies!!!
It boils my blood to be quite frank, its a racket, a scam, a bloody out and out rip off.

It's not greed - but simple statistics.

Young people crash. A lot.

Sadly it is a bit unfair for the number of genuinely safe young drivers; but from what I've seen from the local herbets racing round town it's probably quite justified.

I got quoted £16000 once. It was for a 3.0tdi defender though. I suppose they were right to charge me a little more, but 4 times more than the car was worth..good job I checked before buying one.

However, my mate went through an insurance broker and got insured on a 3.0TD Hilux Invincible at 19 for £1000. Maybe that would be a good shout. Don't give up.

Cheers

Im driving a 1275gt and im 18 i went through the brokers, "The Insurance Factory", the insurance company i am with is aviva. The car is in my name but insured in my dads name with 30 odd years no claims, and myself as a named driver, but i get a years no claims out of it as well if i stay with aviva next year. My insurance is £950, it is still a lot of money to pay if im honest not as much as others are paying though.

I know that people are going to say that it is wrong and so on but it is the only way for a lot of young drivers to get insured, by using their parents as the main driver.

Saying that there are a lot of dodgy insurance companies out there, and other ways of getting no claims bonuses which i am not going to go into.

When I had my accident (which wasn't my fault), I rang up the insurance company and they instantly believed it was my fault before I'd even told them what had actually occured!

Im 20, just getting to point where my premium is going down nicely. If insurance is so high in UK because of higher risk of 17-19 year olds having an accident, how the hell can the US dignify letting 15 years get a drivers permit?!

The best quote I've ever had was £555 for a Ferrari 348 at 19. I actually rang up but it was a glitch but they said they would've had to allow because it was given! If only I was a millionaire and could afford a 348 ahaha

Well, ive done a bit more shopping around and im proud to say the last quote i was given was for £7495.... and although that was a little steep, they did also offer one broker who would go as low as £4854.... now thats a BIG saving....

What a total sham!!! These quotes were with a comparison site actually called "4YoungDrivers" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA..... new ribs please!!

Thats in British pounds and not Zimbabwean Dollars as i foolishly thought.....

The quotes were for a 17yr old new driver, a 998cc Mini City with me (his dad) as the named second driver, at fully comp level......
I later tried third party only, came back in the region of £5000.... the worlds gone mad.... mental.... pencils-in-the-head barking bonkers.

Heads done in again now....

The car only cost 1800!!!

Try with Aviva and give all the price comparison sites a go. I pay £1400 at 18 with a 1275 with Aviva.

I think the big difference is that first year of insurance, i mean a lot of folks are giving the same sort of prices with reference to being 18yrs old.... so im guessing its the 1 year of track record and also a years no claims etc that reduces it so much.... just such a shame that its so bloody difficult to get a set of wheels insured after all the effort and care taken to earn the full licence.....
I have twin boys, so its going to be the same story and the same cost, twice!
Last year they both had mopeds, but one was hit by a van that pulled out without looking..... apart from a broken collar bone, he was ok... but it scared the hell out of everyone and that was the end of them riding on two wheels..... i vowed to get them on four wheels and at least a little more safer inside a steel shell..... its not really working out very well so far!!

I only passed my test earlier this year, so I have no no claims. Admittedly, waiting until I was 18 knocked £300 off.

That might be the key to some closure on this.... theyre 18 in February, so it possibly looking like a bit of a wait until then... they'll be gutted though, summers here (sort of) and theyre keen as mustard... but i suppose that gives me more chance to get any jobs done on the Mini's.... ones bought and freshly MOT'ed and the other is a restoration in progress....

Thanks for your replies Luke, really appreciated mate.
