What Tiger is talking about is that a modern timing light should require two power connections, not one. A good modern light will have an inductive pickup that clamps around the plug wire, not go in series with the wire. For this to work the light will have two power clips, one of which connects to an earth point, the other to a 12V supply. Old lamps that went in series with the plug wires often had NO power connections and relied on a dim neon light to strobe the timing marks. They were very hard to use in all but very dimly lit locations.

I got a VERY good deal on my most recent timing light purchase. I bought an Actron (brand) unit that has a tach built in as well as offering an electronic advance setting. I paid about $70 for it on Amazon and have been VERY pleased. It has a much higher reliability rating than the comparably priced units from Eqqus and it is much less expensive than comparable units from MAC and Snap-On. After decades of using a separate tach and a cheap, simple timing light with no advance capability... this Actron lamp has proven to be an excellent investment.
