hi all. i have a 1986 mayfair 998. my gearbox is up for replacement as the 2nd gear synchromesh has gone and its a bit whiny. i have managed to purchase a gearbox from ebay believing that many parts that fit one mini fit another. i have a concern tho in that the box i have bought is a magic wand type. i am not sure what this means and am starting to question whether or not it is going to fit as easily as i thought. please shed some light on this for me. thanx. :'(

As far as i know the magic wand type gearbox is from an earlier mini and wont fit your engine with out a fair bit of work

It'd possibly fit the engine, but not necessarily into the shell... :D

Mini's were in production for almost 42 years, why do so many people seem to think that the parts didn't change much in that time?

You need a rod change, A plus type garbox. Try to get one with the same final drive that you already have.
