I have an SMS GPS tracker, a bit different to yours but mine seems to get the GPS location from car parks.

Haven't got mine yet. Still waiting from China.

But my GPS nav loses connection whenever I enter a carpark (underground or above ground inside building). Roof-less (non-concrete) carparks I'd imagine wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, but if you mean a GPS Sat Nav such as a Garmin it uses their own GPS signals.

These GPS trackers from China use Mobile Network GPS signals and send you coordinates to type into Bing Maps, Google Earth or similar software, and work pretty much anywhere providing you can get a Mobile Network signal.

I think the best way is not advertise what security you have on any public forum

You've got a point there but I'll wager most minis are stolen by opportunist thieves. There's bound to be one or two looking on a forum for that mint £15,000 Mk1 S to take but most will be taken by relatively local low life. I didn't know those devices existed so thank you headsock.

PS I think a detachable steering wheel is probably the most effective deterrent against the majority of attempted thefts (as long as you don't leave the wheel in the car....). Also a secret switch to cut the fuel pump will let them drive it a short distance before it cuts out. I bet most would then do a runner leaving your 'broken down' pride and joy.

Or even better you could not advertise your car on a public forum. For this reason I always take the number plate out of photos I share.

GPS chips are pretty cheap now, but if you're relying on SMS to alert you, you'll need a GSM (phone) network connection anyway. Pucka gps would have the advantage that it couldn't be blocked with easily available phone blockers. A simple magnetic compass would seem the best option to detect if a car is actually on the move, how far could they get in a straight line?

I got a detachable steering wheel for security, it is easy to use and they can't drive with no wheel. But you need a bag big enough for it or you look a tit walking round town.
