I had to go through this the other day, the only way you can find out properly is just to put the other sim cards in it :D

But it depends where you got the phone from determines whether it's locked or not :D

Well you could always jailbreak and unlock it if it doesn't work? :D

Or order a free 3 simcard and try it in your phone first? :-)

Wrong. Its the other way round. Contract = locked, pay and go = unlocked unless carrier locked it at time of purchase which shouldn't happen on pay and go.

Mines on contract and unlocked, and Ive had locked and unlocked pay and go phones... Ive found that if its locked, the networks logo is usually printed somewhere on the phone but Apple probably wouldnt let networks violate the precious Iphone in such a way

Jailbreak that puppy, then install ultrasn0w and then et voila you have a unlocked iphone

then install winterboard, download some themes off cydia, enjoy the custom-ness!

No need to jailbreak it just to unlock it!!

Just call the carrier it was oringally locked to.
They have to now unlock any phone that on or had been on contract or is pay as you go.

If its pay as you go you will need to buy a sim with about £20 worth if credit and If its pay monthly then you will need to borrow a sim or the original carrier for 24 hours (best to just get a pay as you go sim).

Most of the carriers now have pages like this:

https://www.o2.co.uk... Unlocking Form

So jailbreaking should be a last resort.

The O2 unlock form does not always work if you are not currently on O2. I know this as that I am currently trying to unlock my iPhone 3gs. I bit the bullet and paid £40 to get it IEMI unlocked through iTunes.

Here is the website I used they are pretty quick on getting things done too :D

But id you get a O2 pay as you go sim it will only cost £20...

I did this for a colleague last week (just before O2 went down it was his fault).

just rang orange and they said they can do it but will take up to 1 month :L
on pay as you go the only way to pay for unlocking is through topping up your phone and they will take payment for it that way,
i find that a bit stupid, but apparntly i'll recieve a text when i sound top up to pay,
hope it wont take too long :(
