But it depends where you got the phone from determines whether it's locked or not

Or order a free 3 simcard and try it in your phone first?

Wrong. Its the other way round. Contract = locked, pay and go = unlocked unless carrier locked it at time of purchase which shouldn't happen on pay and go.If the phones originally on contract then it is unlocked if it was bought as pay & go the phone is locked to the network it came with

I am yet to see a contract phone that is locked. All of my previous phones family & friends contract phones have & are unlocked, all pay & go phones I & friends have Ownd we're all locked so I previously needed to unlock them

Just call the carrier it was oringally locked to.
They have to now unlock any phone that on or had been on contract or is pay as you go.
If its pay as you go you will need to buy a sim with about £20 worth if credit and If its pay monthly then you will need to borrow a sim or the original carrier for 24 hours (best to just get a pay as you go sim).
Most of the carriers now have pages like this:
https://www.o2.co.uk... Unlocking Form
So jailbreaking should be a last resort.

I did this for a colleague last week (just before O2 went down it was his fault).

on pay as you go the only way to pay for unlocking is through topping up your phone and they will take payment for it that way,
i find that a bit stupid, but apparntly i'll recieve a text when i sound top up to pay,
hope it wont take too long
