Hi everyone,

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of roller painting their Mini. I tried rolling my Mini with Rustoleum combi-colour using the usual sponge rollers for gloss paint. I’ve watched the videos on how to do it, but that didn’t really tell me anything I didn’t already know. I tried thinning the paint at different amounts, but I was still unhappy with the finish. The orange peel was just a little bit too much for me. On top of that, the roller lines are very difficult to avoid when you are desperately trying to roll out air bubbles, and if you don’t roll out all the air bubbles the roller produces, then you end up with little craters where the bubbles were when the paint has dried.

Anyway, enough of rollering, the other day I was reading about the Rustoleum Hard Hat aerosols, and wondered if they were really as good as the manufacturers claim. They say they cover in one pass, and one can is equivalent to 2 to 3 of the rattle cans of the same size. Well, I bought six cans and started painting my Mini with these yesterday, and I have to say I am really impressed at how far one aerosol goes. To give you some idea of what you can expect, I have sprayed the front panel, both front wings, A panels, scuttle and windscreen surround with one 500ml can. It covers brilliant, and is flat like you would expect when you are spraying paint, and none of that orange peel, and looks a million times better than rolling the paint on. As far as I’m concerned it’s a no brainer. The only good thing I personally find with roller painting is you do get a high gloss finish, so no need to cut and polish to get a good shine.

Six aerosols cost me £61,20 free post on orders over £50 + vat, so you would need to buy at least six cans to get free post. This is where I bought mine. http://www.rustoleum...olourselect/3/8 By the way…No I don’t work for them :D

Hope you find this useful

Iv used that stuff to colour code some tools at work. Stuck well despite not keying the metal.

But.......why not just use normal rattle cans as I assume you used a primer under top coat anyway?

Would be nice to see some pics though!

I was thinking of rattle canning my mini. I've been using this stuff to spray my wheels, http://compare.ebay....sbar&adtype=pla It lasts for ages and has a nice even coverage.

This photo is about 6" away after roller painting

Photo below is also about 6" away after spraying with Hard Hat aerosol. It is a different colour blue to the one above as I changed my mind on the colour :D

I wouldn't touch a normal rattle can after using the Hard Hat aerosols.

By the way, if you have already rolled on Rustoleum Combi-colour, you can't spray over it with Rustoleum Hard Hat aerosols as it will react, and look like you've put paint stripper on...I know because I tried it :shy:

Have you tried flatting the rollered parts and polishing them. The rollered bits look like they have more depth of shine which might flat and polish out to a good shing. Not saying the hard hat wont polish up but just how it looks at the mo.

I haven't tried flattening the roller paint, but will give it a try on the roof as that hasn't been stripped off yet. I'm sure the hard hat will polish up, but I have to wait until it's fully cured (7 days).

careful polishing I remember plasticoat, tried to polish it and it went flat and horrid, so try on a small area away from car first and if it gave a really good finish i am sure we all in the trade would use it

Rustoleum if fine to wet sand and polish up. On mine we (Garry :P) attacked it with 1200, then out with the machine polisher with G3 cutting compound and then polish and it shined up great :)

Graham

The rollered bits (seen some spray jobs that are worse) do look like they have more depth to the shine than the sprayed bits. But if the rolled bits are left for a few Weeks and then poshed most of the orange peal will disappear and still have a deep shine to it. The sprayed bits to be honest won't polish up as good and might only be more satin than gloss.

Im just curious now as to how the hard hats sand and buff out. Also wondering how many layers you will need to apply.
