Hi all. Sorry if this has been posted before?
I've had an old 998 Engine at the end of my garden now for a good 2 years, since it's sitting doing nothing. I've thought I'd make a fast road 998 maybe a Rebore too.

So can anyone tell me what I would need to make a fast road 998?

Again sorry if this has been posted, if there's any threads about it already please give me link, and if in wrong section please move :)

I think you could start with sorting the head out. Send it away for a little flowing work. Then look at gettinhg a cam. You could then go mad and have the bottom lightened and balanced and as said a rebore. How deep are your pockets??

Which cam would be best? Kent cam? Not in rush, as have engine in Mini at them moment, so only do to in my spare time. So pretty good pockets.

Im curently building a fast 998. Have a look through my build thread Link. I will upload some more images if anybody actually repliesto my thread. Anyway get the Vizzard book - its great. The spec that ive gone for is pretty good for a 998. A 3.44 final drive would probably be better and you could run a Kent 276 however you would have to keep the revs up if you want to drive it on the road. Also my spec should be good for around 60 BHP at the wheels or 70 BHP at the flywheel.

Hope this hepls

Thanks, will take a look at your thread. Straight cut gears too?
Also what spec are you going for? Is it in the book? :D

The book is supposed to be the bible. I have never looked into it. I have the advantage of knowing a very good engine builder who has done alot with mini engines so he is sorting mine! I have a kent cam kicking around but im not sure if it is still servicable!

You would need to read and understand the processes of modding the engine! you can do what you want but the more you do the more complicated it gets. Best advice i can offer is, make it strong and be thorough! Im so out of touch with minis im struggling myself. Speak to some of the companys and see what they recommend but have a rough idea of what you want. The fastest 998cc on the road or one that has great acceleration. For example i just said to my builder i just want something just a bit better than a 1098cc

Thanks, Im keeping the standard helical gears as they are strong and quite. The rest of my spec is in my thread. And there are also some builds in the Vizard book as well as lots of other good tips.

I would go with a 3.76 diff or there abouts, just that alone will vastly improve accelleration and give a little more top speed.

New timing chain will help keep the engine on spec

Get the ignition timing spot on (not set by the book) and new plugs points and condensor.

Then the carb, reprofile the needle to get more power.

The head next if you want to spend, get it gas flowed.

Last thing for me would be the cam but dont go too wild.

Should be a quick motor for very little money.

I
Get the ignition timing spot on (not set by the book)

is that the "wait till the revs drop, then back a tad" method? ... as opposed to 12 degrees at 1,500rpm on a 99H block
Got to set up our race car tonight as head and carb changed, so very interested in that comment.
