I have sitting at home waiting to be installed the following:

Aiwa CDC-R 227
6.5" Mutant coaxials (90w RMS, 180w Max)
12" Mutant-X sub (450w RMS, 900W Max)

The headunit may be upgraded soon depending on my budget but its not a bad unit.
So my question is what amplifier should I get to power this system - should I get a good mono block to run the sub and run the coaxs off the HU or should I get a 3 / 4 channel amp to power the lot?

Are the RMSs really that high? I didn't expect that from Mutant gear!

Most budget 4ch amps only really put out 250w RMS or so when bridged...then again, what voice coils does the sub have?

If it's a single 4 ohm, then a cheapish mono amp won't really help as they tend to do the most power and lower impedences!

Those are the RMS figures quoted in the docs that come with the speakers. And yes the sub is a 4ohm type...

Mutant recommend a bridged 300W amp... obviously one of their own but this may provide some clues as to alternatives?

There's an echo in here :dontgetit:

What's your budget for the amp(s)? Do they have to be knew, or will 2nd hand be ok? That will have a pretty big bearing on what you can get!

Heh :dontgetit: damned edit post copied the same line twice

Ehm I'd say my budget would be up to about a £100 maybe more but that'd be stretching it. And I have no problem with second hand amps...

Which amp? The Mutant?

Personally I'd get the JBL 75.4 (yes, I know it gets recommended a hell of a lot) It's within budget, powers the fronts nicely...but does only give the sub 250w RMS

I can't think of any other options for such little cash that fulfil enough of your criteria!

Sorry I forgot to put in a link to the amp that I meant :D its been sold now any way so that doesn't matter.

If I were to get a monoblock to power the sub what sort of power should the amp give the sub, and how will the fronts sound being run off the HU (for the time being)?

Will running the sub at 250w RMS when its rated at 450w RMS do it any harm?

It's not that hard to edit your post so it doesn't sound like you're repeating yourself :D

Depends what you want...if you're a basshead, then get an amp that does 500w RMS @ 4ohm for the sub and run the fronts from the HU

If you want a better overall sound, then get a 4ch amp like the JBL I suggested

Is the wattage an 280watts rms or is it max, the rms figure is the only reliable figure you can use, max figures just tend to be made up and mean nothing.

Yes...a lot more! See how retarded peak is?

I'd like at something with 50w RMS or so...should be dead easy :P
