Also keep in mind that 500w instead of 250w through the sub will only give you a 3db rise in total sound pressure, whereas amping the speakers rather than using the HU will make them louder and clearer at the same time by a much more noticeable amount.

Or are they just less effecient.

I tend to find a lot of speakers with really high rms figures just tend to need a bigger amp to power them and both the speaker and amp tend to be cooking after a good bit of use.

I've never been convinced that a 500watt sub is any louder than a 150watt sub based solely on the power output, there's a lot of other factors like the excursion that make all the difference.

An example of this is a the JL audio 12W0 sub, its an absolute stonker of a sub but is only rated at 125watts rms (stop sniggering at the back),

my mate had one which we fitted a few years back, another mate had an alpine which was rated at more than double the rms of the JL, both were fitted in the correct size enclosures and both were run off suitable amps (both alpine V12 IIRC).

The JL wiped the floor with the alpine, in the end he ditch the Alpine sub and fitted a JL 12w0.

Can't say that I'm a fan of the w0 series at all, but it's true you can't judge how loud a sub will be just by always looking at power figures (although you CAN be sure that a 500w amp WILL drain your battery twice as quickly as a 250w one :P)

Yes...a lot more! See how retarded peak is?

I'd like at something with 50w RMS or so...should be dead easy :-

As a side note, you can't tell how loud an install is with your ears :-

Also, power ratings alone mean sod all. Higher RMS rated subs are less efficient, but even then the efficiency doesn't REALLY mean how efficient the sub is in the real world

Funny old thing, ain't it :P

So running a 500w RMS sub on a 280w RMS amp won't do it any harm?

No...if the gains are set correctly (i.e. you dont try and make it louder and louder because you aren't satisfied, thus feed the sub a clipped/distorted signal)

Nothing wrong with it at all, it's just nicer to have more amp power as "headroom"

Is there any difference between having 2 x JBL GTO 72.2 (one for the front one for the sub), 1 75.2 for the front and a JBL 301.1 for the sub or having a single 75.4 (in 3 channel mode) ?

i always prefer to use a proper mono amp rather than a bridged 2 or 4 channel to power a sub, thats what mono amps are built for so they are generally geared up for subs.

Use a 2 channel for the fronts and a mono for the sub thats the best way if you have the cash and space for the amps.
