depends which type you are fitting, electrical or capliery!
both need a fitting at the front of the block, the electrical one has a wire going to your guage and the capilery one has a small pipe going to it!

That won't work Tom. The light is only triggered by a simple switch and wouldn't give the variable signal needed to run a gauge.

As MMJ says, whether mechanical or electrical, an additional fitting will be needed in the block. For mechanical this would ba a simple 'take off' port whereas for electrical it will be some form of pressure transducer.

Ten you run either the pipe or the wire to the gauge in the dash. You'd probably need to tap the gauge into the lighting circuit too for night time.

How 2 fit an oil pressure gauge

Remove the oil switch with is located on the left hand side of the engine.
Remove wire and undo (26mm/1”), don’t’ worry the engine oil won’t end up all over the floor.

To enable the light on the dash to still works screw in a t-piece adaptor, nice and tight to prevent oil leaks.

You can now refit the old switch into the adaptor, refit wire.

Next screw in the oil pressure pipe into the adaptor.
Route the pipe round the engine avoiding and sharp bends/moving objects to the bulkhead.

Find a suitable place in the bulkhead to drill a hole to allow the pipe to pass through in to the interior.
Make sure you use a rubber grommet to prevent any future oil leaks.

You can now attach the other end of the tube to the gauge itself.
And find a suitable place to mount the gauge on the dash.

So the gauge can bee seen at night, test behind the light switch for the sidelight circuit.
Then feed off this to the bulb in the gauge.

Start the engine and check for any oil leaks, if found just nip the connectors up a bit.

you only need a T if you want to keep the pressure warning switch.

Pneumatic fittings suppliers tend to be cheaper than auto accessory suppliers. Have a look in yellow pages for compressor or hydraulic hose companies.

There may also be an issue if you are using a tim gauge or a smiths gauge. The following pipe fits perfectly into the back of the smiths gauge

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=38153

howvever if you are using a Tim gauge then you will need the following adapter to convert the pipe to the connection on the back of the Tim gauge

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=36753 (i know it says for plastic pipe but it works for the braided one to)

I have just done all this on my mini and here is a list of the parts i bought for installing a Tim guage

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=38153 (Braided pipe cause running plastic through the engine bay didnt sound too clever to me)

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=36753 (adapter to fit braided pipe into back of Tim gauge not needed for smiths gauge)

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=36753 (t-piece because i wanted to still keep my pressure warning sensor light on the dash working)

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=37666 (adapter to fit oil pipe into t-piece adaptor)

Thats about it i also purchased a new pressure warning sensor that comes on when the pressure drops to below 20 psi rather than original whcih come on below 8 psi which is far to late and probably does you engine damage by the time it warns you.

Hopw that helps a little :shifty:
