I had an old mustang with holly 4barrel carb with small stacks , and a sock filter similar to yours - but bigger
one day (car running fine) the engine started backfiring - not sure why at the time ...
then stalled - no problem - restarted after a couple of seconds - run weird for a couple of secs - then cleared
couldn't stop - because of busy traffic - thought I'd picked up a bit of water in the fuel
when I could stop - lifted bonnet , to find air filter (sock) gone - with a ring of burnt foam around the edge
the engine ate the air filter
I'm sure they are now flame retardant - but we were given oil to spray on the sock to trap dust
went back to old paper filter (looked boring) after that
fat Americans will eat anything

I don't think it's something you will have a problem with ... as I think they are now better ...

hope this doesn't happen to me
but i have a gauze over the mouth of the ram pipe so it shouldn't as you say "eat" the sock
I'm sure it won't happen - as the a series has better manners
it was a grumpy engine which gulped a lot of air
306 ci - that in the end was killed by a mouse chewing the wire loom

yeah, i don't think a little 998 has the capability of pulling an air filter through the carb
