i think my engine is from 87 and is a 998. will replacing the clutch slave cylinder (as u will see) and want to know what type it is. i think it is non verto due to its positioning but thought that clutches were verto by 87. if so i take it that this engine is not an 87. lol

thanks

Yep, that is certainly a pre-verto clutch arm judging by it's length and position.

Sorry to have to tell you this but that means it's an 850. Made between '69 and '79 I think but beyond that I don't know much about 850's. Someone else will though.

I got a Mini once which I was told was a 998 when I paid for it, that turned out to be an 850 too. I was young a naieve at the time....

I suppose someone COULD have re-built it as a 998 (same block casting) but I can't see how they could do that properly without taking the plate off, and who would have put it back on afterwards?

i used to have an 850 in there. but it was pile of c**p, a friend of mine had this engine lying around and so we switched them over. soon as i got in it it was much quicker than the old engine. when he got it he was told it was a 998 and due to the increase in speed from the old engine we never had reason to doubt it.

is there anything else i can check which tells me what size engine it is. think it would be very unlikely that it has been re built but u never know??

Only really open it up and measure the bore and stroke.

is there much point in increasing performance of it? have got a full stage 1 kit would it not be better to buy a 998 and bolt it all on to that? what is the benefit of fitting a different head on it??

I had a 12G295 on my 850, and it does help. You can do a lot with the 850, but a 998 type Stage 1 won't be much good for it. Most of the parts will be fine but you'd probably need a different needle.

got a garage to set up the carb properly after i put the stage one on it. would have thought they might have picked up on it while adjusting it.

had it all checked over and runs really well now, just sorting out the clutch and brakes and will be ther.

in your opinion what would be best: buy a 998 and fit my stage 1 etc. or carry on with the 850 and upgrade that. will i not reach the limit of what i can get from my 850 pretty soon without spending lots of money.
