Both fit with some engineering
Up to your style of driving which you choose.
Superchargers are more lower end torque, turbo is upper end power

Superchargers work all the time so use more juice whereas turbos only start working at a certain rev limit.

What mod's have you got on your engine so far? Maybe a different port & polished head & new cam would be a good start for more power instead of going down the expensive charger route?

Neither are these will be cheap! A few hundred at least if you get lucky with second hand bits. The cheapest supercharger kit is about £1500. Both also require a reasonable understanding of engineering. If you put up a spec and a budget there are loads of people on here that will give suggestions for a way forward.

The main cost with both these mods is upgrading the gearbox.

As a minimum you want a very good condition box, rebuilt preferably, and a cross pin diff. Also an uprated clutch will be needed.

If a big power increase is what you want, pistons will also need to be changed and a good quality high flowing cylinder head will be needed.

not quite true, spec the turbo correctly and you'll have a low boost threshold.

My opinion, if you want a cheap power increase ditch the 998 and fit a std 1275. Leave the forced induction untill you've done a lot more research.

I'll have to +1 that.

Forced induction isn't the same as sending your head to minispares for some stage three work. It requires a fair bit of thought, a lot of money and a huge amount of patience.

However, of you are determined, start with a google of 'turbo mini' and do a lot of reading. Once you have the basic concepts then you can start asking useful questions.

+1 for ditching the 998,

The cost of rebuilding a 998, is the same as a 1275 pretty much, and so you can either spend £800~ on rebuilding the 998 or about that for a rebuilt 1275.

For any performance mods I would always start with an engine and 'box that you know is solid and preferably a rebuilt one thats been run in correctly, the poer increase in going to 1275 would be very noticable, and will keep you happy for a while, then you can look into getting the engine to breathe better, then make a more efficient, which can include turbo and super charging, but by the time you have got to that level then you will know more about performance and what you want.

Get reading the "yellow bible" (David vizards tuning the a-series) its a goldmine of info :)

no pun intended :P

seriously though, if you want a reliable power upgrade go stage one 1275 with a re bore if needed...good performance boost for less than £800, sorted.

Just to add slightly to this. I agree that changing to a 1275 sort of makes sense. But actually if you build a low boost 998 (say 5 to 8psi) then you'll get 70 to 80 bhp. This would not require any box mods at all, not even the diff.

But to do a half decent job of turbo charging you'll need £1500.

Yeah as above, with low boost you won't need gearbox mods at all, but i'd still avoid excessive wheelspin until the diff has been uprated.

I quite like the idea of turbo 998's, as a turbo makes a good replacement for cc's!

If you want a Fast and reliable mini, it wont be cheap.

If you want a fast and cheap mini, it wont be reliable.

My old tutor told me that, and so far it has been true, although I am sure someone will prove me wrong

Someone will prove you wrong you say? I'm sure there are people whom will say that their mini is not fast, not cheap and not reliable! haha :P
