Hello folks,

Don't think this has been posted here yet, but have a read of the retro rides thread:

http://retrorides.pr...d=135328&page=1

Its all a bit over my head at the moment, but from what i can gather after having a good read, is that soon enough, any modifications at all, including alloy wheels and small changes like that, could command an IVA.

Something obviously needs to be done otherwise it'd wipe everyone out, most of us would lose our cars, and mines my daily driver, for example.

Anyway, i could go on for ages, but i'll let everyone have a read and comment, now i've bought it to everyone's attention.

Not sure if its in the right section, feel free to move it if it isn't.

Wonder how this would effect the German market as it is law that they swap for winter tyres once the snow starts. The main way is to have 2 sets of alloys as this is easier and cheaper than swapping tyres every 6 months.

Please oppose this proposal.

http://ec.europa.eu/...ions/pti_en.htm

It jeopardises the legitimate activities of thousands or motor enthusiasts, that also generates millions of pounds in the UK economy. There is no social value in compelling motorists to keep their vehicles in strictly original condition and modifications & improvements have always been allowed, within the bounds of the current construction and use regulations.

There is already adequate legislation in the UK administered by the DVLA and VOSA - MoT's, IVA.

Do you really wish to make it illegal for us to fit seatbelts to cars that didn't have them as original equipment; improve vehicle lighting, brakes & suspension to make vehicles safer?

This legislation is likely to be incompatible with Article 7 of ECHR in many cases and will cause chaos for those charged with enforcing it, if it is passed.

Tommy this thing isn't just about dangerous mods, this is any mods! Anything that isn't standard and the same as when it left the show room.

So you're saying that you'd be more than happy to pay in excess of around £500 every time you felt like changing your wheels, or seats, or bolting some arches on etc?

Perfection! I know what you mean somewhat, logic dictates it shouldnt be allowed to be passed because it would screw up more than it remedies, but still got to try and oppose it.

If its similar to German law then the potential disaster is enormous. My sister lives in Germany and has a list of approved tyres for her motorbike. Even if better, safer tyres are made she can't fit them unless they are preapproved. It is a complete nightmare and typical,of euro idiots making rules they don't understand themselves. Is the major cause of death on British roads modified cars? No, it's idiots speeding and driving dangerously.

After a quick skim over the forum, the ACE member that replies to that thread says this has been in the making for 8 years. If so why are we only hearing about it or trying to raise the alarm now when its supposedly too late to make an impact?

Surely the government wouldn't allow this when they're trying to save jobs and the economy, this would have a massive impact and yet the only info you can find on it is on small car club forums? Whats that about

Just sounds like scaremongering.

Stupid law. My car handles better on alloys instead of steelies, I can be seen and see better with halogen headlights instead of sealed beam units, I can stop quicker with better brakes fitted. My spotlights allow me to see a lot better in the dark when nobody else is around. My chrome door handles don't offend anybody. My seats are more comfortable than the standard seats, meaning I concentrate on the road and not my numb arse.

This type of thing is infuriating, proposed by some idiot who drives (or is driven in) some big BMW, Audi or Jag, who has no need or desire to change their car from how it left the factory. Once again the EU are showing how far out of touch they are with everybody. Obviously your car's modifications should be safe, but this is covered by MOT and other checks as Ethel said.

I hope, and half expect you're right. But just in case, I'm happy to rattle a few MEP's cages.

Remeber your meps may not be supporting this so always play their friendly side for e.g. Start with like "You may or may not be supporting this but i and many of the countries drivers do not"

My friends dad is an mp but its not an mep so it maybe different actually do what you feel....
