Stainless steel costs a lot more and weighs a lot more.
Composite would be cheaper and lighter

GT40 closely followed by a Healey 100/6. But in the 'may possibly be able to afford one day' category it would be a TR4 (TR5 s are going for stupid money now).
For Healey money or top TR money, you can buy a Mallock GTD40 replica or similar. An old mate who's raced and run the real things, says "don't knock GT40 replicas!" - with the right set up you can get the whole GT40 experience for a fraction of the cost!

Some of them are really nice, there is a place just down the road from me in Minworth that makes them. But at 40k + for a top spec one they will forever be out of my price range unless I win the lottery. Whereas as decent TR4 can be had for 10k, still a lot for a toy but within the realms of reality.
