I got my dad a ipad for his birthday this year and it's probably the best thing we've ever got him, he's not very computer literate but he can't put it down!

or any other magazine that he'd like.

The mag subscription is what I was going to suggest. How old is he? Does he still work, does he have a lot of spare time etc? Maybe some kind of course that he might be interested in, such as a basic photography course?

Keep it simple; it's the thought that counts. Best little present I got was a small oil can with a handle/pump on the side; gets used for everything from filling up the dashpot to lubricating an engine rebuild.
